A student demonstration on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan in Central Jakarta has come to an end. The road leading toward Gambir Station is now open to the public once more. According to observations at the scene on Friday, July 17, 2026, the protest concluded at approximately 5:55 PM Western Indonesia Time.

The crowd of students moved from their original positions toward a U-turn located in front of the BSI building. Police officers kept the demonstrators contained within the initial area, preventing them from shifting onto other lanes. By 5:58 PM, the police dismantled the barricades, and vehicles arriving from the direction of the Horse Statue began to pass through immediately.

The atmosphere grew calm as the students distributed bread to passing motorists, who accepted the food. Earlier in the afternoon, student speakers had addressed the crowd from a command vehicle. They had requested permission to march further toward the Horse Statue or the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, but they remained held near the BSI building.

The demonstrators raised several broad political concerns during the rally. According to their spokesmen, the primary demands focused on restructuring the state governance system, safeguarding Indonesian education, and ensuring civil sovereignty. They stated that this protest was part of a planned series of demonstrations aimed at the Prabowo-Gibran cabinet.

Based on local reports, the student group arrived at the scene around 3:10 PM. They brought one command vehicle and attempted to head toward the Horse Statue before police blocked their path and diverted traffic. The road remained closed for nearly three hours before order was restored and the traffic flow returned to normal.
