While several motorcyclists complied and turned around, others chose to force their way through the young crowd near the Cengkareng traffic light.
According to the Chief of the Cengkareng Police Traffic Unit, AKP Yeni, officers frequently monitor the area to prevent motorists from invading the pedestrian space. However, she noted that violators often comply only when law enforcement is visible. "We often monitor the location. But when we are there, they suddenly do not ride on the sidewalk. It is like a game of cat and mouse," Yeni said.
Based on the recurring issue, the police plan to coordinate with the Jakarta Transportation Agency and the DKI Jakarta Bina Marga Office to install iron barriers along the sidewalk. Yeni emphasized that the path belongs strictly to pedestrians, and riding on it endangers public safety.
While acknowledging the children's initiative, Yeni also warned them about the dangers of playing near a busy highway. She noted that children often play soccer on the sidewalk, which is also an inappropriate use of the pedestrian infrastructure.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency Chief, Syafrin Liputo, also addressed the incident, reminding the public of the legal function of sidewalks. He urged all road users to respect the designated spaces for pedestrians and people with disabilities, emphasizing that convenience should not compromise safety.
