Hometown Officials Back Mississippi Sheriff After Derelict Attack

Mississippi state officials rallied to support local law enforcement on Wednesday after national figures criticized the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. State Senator Jeremy England defended the integrity of Jackson County investigators following claims by NAACP President Derrick Johnson that officials were "derelict in their duties." England called the accusations unfair and insisted that investigators are working carefully to establish the facts.

Wells disappeared on July 4 during a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Search crews discovered his body two days later on the island's northwestern tip. Local authorities previously stated that foul play was not suspected, noting that investigators believe Wells chose to remain on the island while his friends returned to the mainland.

The criticism intensified during a news conference where civil rights attorney Ben Crump presented findings from an independent autopsy. Pathologist Dr. Roger Mitchell noted a area of red discoloration on Wells" head but left the cause of death undetermined pending further investigation. According to former medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden, such superficial injuries often occur from debris in the water and do not automatically indicate foul play.

Political leaders in Jackson County reaffirmed their trust in Sheriff John Ledbetter. Congressman Mike Ezell stated he maintains full confidence in the sheriff's team to handle the matter with complete integrity. Public figures, including Reverend Al Sharpton, have offered rewards for information, but local leaders insist that public pressure will not alter the precise work of the state crime lab and local detectives.
