A heavy mass of discarded waste has choked the flow of the Kali Baru river along the Jakarta-Bogor highway in Bogor Regency, West Java. The accumulation is vast. Local authorities estimate that it will take dozens of vehicles to clear the waterway completely.

According to the Regional Secretary of Bogor Regency, Ajat Rochmat Jatnika, the blockage is severe. "We found a blockage in the Kali Baru stream due to a very large accumulation of garbage," Ajat stated on Saturday. "We estimate that approximately 50 to 60 trucks are needed to transport all of the waste."

The clearing of the river began on Friday. Based on official statements, the workers will need at least three days of continuous labor to remove the debris from the water. "We will continue the handling for the next two to three days," Ajat explained, watching the slow progress of the removal.

The official called upon the people to stop treating the water as a graveyard for their refuse. He reminded them that the river belongs to everyone, from the high hills to the low plains. "Water flows from upstream to downstream," Ajat said. "If you throw trash into the river, it will be carried to the downstream area. Therefore, we invite all people, both those living along the riverbanks and in the upstream areas, to look after the cleanliness of the river together and not litter."

The work on the Kali Baru is part of a larger plan to restore order to the Jakarta-Bogor highway corridor. Beyond the extraction of filth, the local government intends to repair the sidewalks and pedestrian paths. They want to make the old road neat and comfortable for those who walk beside it, stripping away everything that ruins the look of the place.
