Keraton Solo Dispute Erupts Over Historic Palace Access

Tense verbal dispute at the historic Keraton Solo palace grounds in Indonesia

A viral video capturing a tense verbal altercation within the historic grounds of the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace in Solo, Central Java, has drawn public scrutiny. The Palace Customary Council, known as Lembaga Dewan Adat, issued a formal statement on Tuesday to clarify the events of July 5, 2026. According to the council, the arrival of GKR Koes Moertiyah Wandansari, widely known as Gusti Moeng, was not intended to disrupt any ongoing activities held by rival factions.

The Chairman of the council, KPH Eddy Wirabhumi, stated that the circulating video fails to portray the full sequence of events, creating a distorted narrative in the public eye. The confrontation occurred when Gusti Moeng approached Ana Muji Rahayuning Tyas, a personal assistant to the mother of PB XIV Purboyo, to demand access to the Keputren and Ndalem Ageng quarters. The council emphasized that these areas hold significant cultural value and are vital to the ongoing palace revitalization project.

Based on the press release, Gusti Moeng had previously made three separate requests to unlock the gates to the sacred chambers. The council maintained that these requests were not an attempt to assert unilateral control over the property. Instead, the objective was to secure a shared key so that traditional rites could continue and government-backed restoration work could proceed smoothly under the Ministry of Culture.

The first two requests were reportedly directed to Tyas, while the third was delivered directly to the mother of PB XIV Purboyo following the Bedhaya Ketawang ceremony in June 2026. The council noted that none of these attempts received a response. The continued closure of the gates has reportedly hindered both cultural practices and infrastructure development within the palace grounds.

The dispute intensified on June 18, 2026, when a revitalization team from the Ministry of Culture entered the Keputren area. Objections were raised by opposing palace factions, who insisted that any entry required explicit permission from PB XIV Purboyo. The Council stated that this division of authority continues to stall necessary preservation efforts for the historic Indonesian landmark.
