Hidden Cash Uncovered Following Evasive Maneuvers

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) intercepted a strategic bribery pipeline intended for Langkat Regent Syah Afandin, tracking a illicit delivery that was abruptly diverted when the official realized anti-graft investigators were monitoring his home district.

The illicit operation unraveled following an initial July 1 meeting coordination between Syah Afandin and his 2024 campaign team member, Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu'arif, which later shifted into a covert hand-off via an intermediary named Syahrial due to rising operational heat.

KPK's Acting Director of Investigation, Achmad Taufik Husein, stated that the agency intercepted Syahrial on his way to Binjai shortly after he collected a Rp 100 million cash bundle from a Medan cafe, discovering the illicit funds hidden directly beneath a car seat cushion.

Following the sting, both Syah Afandin and Yaqub were named suspects in the infrastructure project graft probe, with investigators expanding the case after uncovering an additional Rp 3.5 billion in suspected kickbacks linked to civil service rotations and school uniform procurement contracts.
