The screenplay took roughly six to eight years to refine, developing into a massive narrative that will be split into two distinct parts. Gibson recently announced that production on the sequel has concluded, expressing deep gratitude for a project he considers a central mission of his artistic life.
The original 2004 film earned over $610 million worldwide despite generating intense controversy for its graphic depiction of the crucifixion. The upcoming sequel promises to explore the spiritual realm in unprecedented ways. Wallace teased that while the film will contain elements never before seen on screen, it will ultimately remain the most orthodox and consistent depiction of the awe experienced by Christians.
According to official announcements, "The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One" is scheduled to debut in theaters on May 6, 2027, coinciding with the Christian holiday of Ascension Day. The second installment is slated for release the following year in May 2028. Actor Jaakko Ohtonen will star as Jesus in the upcoming production, stepping into the iconic role previously held by Jim Caviezel.
