KAI Ridership Surges Across Urban and Intercity Rail Networks

The total passenger volume for the first six months of 2026 represents a 7.55 percent year-on-year increase compared to the 240.80 million passengers recorded in the same period last year. This positive trajectory highlights KAI's expanding footprint in bolstering regional connectivity, supporting daily public mobility, and enhancing domestic economic integration through a more unified transit network.

Data reveals significant growth across multiple services, led by the Jabodebek LRT which saw ridership spike 22.84 percent to 16.01 million passengers. Meanwhile, long-distance and local trains accommodated 29.85 million travelers, KAI Commuter carried 204.15 million users, and specialized routes like the Makassar–Parepare line and KAI Wisata tourism services grew by 15.44 percent and 64.45 percent respectively.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that the steady influx of passengers reflects deepening public trust in rail transport as a safe, affordable, and well-integrated travel option. "KAI Group is continuously tailoring its operations to match specific segment demands, ensuring punctuality for daily commuters and enhanced comfort for intercity travelers," Rasyidin added, emphasizing that growth must always align with strict safety standards.

To capture this rising demand, KAI introduced several service expansions in mid-2026, including the new Sangkuriang train connecting Bandung and Ketapang, alongside the Pandalungan 2 route from Jakarta to Jember. Additionally, urban transit connectivity was enhanced through the opening of the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) Commuter station, while the high-demand Rajabasa service in Sumatra increased its seat capacity by 60 percent.
