Iran Restricts Memorial Access to High-Ranking Officials
The Indonesian Ambassador to Tehran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, was unable to enter the inner sanctuary of the Grand Mosalla of Tehran during the official memorial service for the late Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Addressing the public scrutiny surrounding the incident, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stepped forward to explain the administrative and diplomatic hurdles that led to the awkward situation.
Speaking at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Monday, Sugiono revealed that Indonesia had initially decided to designate Ambassador Soemirat as the official state representative due to scheduling conflicts at home. The government was heavily occupied with organizing several high-profile state visits in Jakarta, which prevented senior cabinet members and key dignitaries from traveling to Iran on short notice.

The diplomatic arrangement faced an abrupt challenge on July 2 when Tehran notified Jakarta that access to the main memorial venue would be strictly limited to dignitaries holding a rank higher than an ambassador. "We received the confirmation quite late, leaving us with absolutely no window of time to dispatch a high-ranking special envoy from Jakarta to replace the ambassador," Sugiono stated, explaining the structural protocol shift.
To rectify the diplomatic presence, the Indonesian government is actively coordinating with Iranian authorities to ensure proper representation at the official burial ceremony scheduled for July 9. Minister Sugiono announced that he plans to personally fly to Iran alongside People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani, pending final confirmation of the schedule and venue from the Iranian government.
